Of the approximately 200 000 avocado trees sold in South Africa in 2011, more than 24% was Westfalia Club Cultivar trees. Both Carmen® and Gem® were launched as club cultivars by Westfalia in 2008. These two cultivars were both developed to assist Westfalia in reaching its' strategy to lengthen the South African avocado season.

Part of the South African strategy (pioneered by Westfalia), is to develop new areas within South Africa to extend the South African season and to limit risk.
The supply of superior plant material to upcoming avocado producing countries is also increasing. The 12% trees sold outside South Africa testify of this ever increasing demand for good quality avocado trees.

Over the past 12 years, Westfalia nursery has supplied 50% of all trees sold in South Africa. Also, the need to extend the South African season has resulted in Hass-like avocado cultivars being developed and sold. Of these, Carmen® and Gem® contributes a significant portion.
